Ki & Ka Review

Director : R. Balki Cast : Arjun Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Swaroop Sampat, Rajit Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bhaduri Rating : 3/5 One line Review: R. Balki presents an unconventional concept and tries to break the gender stereotypes in this Rom-Com.Positive Points: The film Ki & Ka skilfully develops the character-sketch of Kareena and Arjun. It presents a fresh yet powerful and brave concept to the audience. It attempts to showcase an unusual story with the complete role reversal of a man and woman, backed by powerful performances.Negative Points: The surprising fact about the story is that there was very less societal pressure that was shown in the movie about the role reversal. A lot of flak was expected for a man who wishes to become a home maker. Another thing is that, the movie loses its grip in the second half.Plot: The film narrates the story of Kabir (Arjun Kapoor) and Kia (Kareena Kapoor) who decide to reverse the socially accepted roles of a man and woman. Kabir is an IIM topper and, the son of a wealthy builder. He has no goals or ambitions in life and wants to become like his mother who was a housewife. While Kia is a super ambitious, career oriented girl who does not wish to compromise on her job and career for marriage and kids. As the story moves ahead, Kia and Kabir meet and become friends. Soon they decide to exchange martial vows and the story jumps to its basic plot.Kabir takes care of the house while Kia climbs up the corporate ladder. But then, due to mutual misunderstanding, arguments, jealousy, and other issues their relationship goes for a toss. Will Kia and Kabir be able to successfully pull off this new model of role reversal or they will fail to sustain their relationship in the process is a further watch in the movie.Direction and other Technical Aspects: Director R. Balki has done a fairly decent task with the direction and execution of the storyline. The plot is weak and confusing at times that does not lead to a proper conclusion. The dialogues are good yet could have been more impact-fully used, to handle such an important topic. Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan’s cameo is one of the best moments of the film. Their presence truly lights up the screen and, their conversation in a particular scene is truly thought provoking.Performances: Kareena Kapoor does a fabulous job as Kia. She is just perfect as the ambitious, career oriented woman who aims to climb up the corporate ladder and achieve success. Also, she is irresistibly beautiful.Arjun Kapoor as an adorable boy-next-door Kabir essays his role with conviction. The body language that he portrays is apt for the character.Swaroop Sampat plays the role of Kia’s mother who is absolutely cool and adds lightness with her presence.Rajit Kapoor as Kabir’s father is a perfect. He is always angry and grumpy, who is worried due to his son’s life choices.Music: The music and songs are catchy and appealing. The background score is decent.Final Verdict: The film is sure a onetime watch for the team’s sheer attempt to present an unconventional tale and touch sensitive yet prominent issues of our society.
