R. Madhavan was born on 01-Jun-1970 in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, India. Madhavan Ranganathan also known as R. Madhavan is an Indian film superstar, writer, producer and TV Host. He is the son of Ranganathan, was a management executive in Tata Steel and his mother name is Saroja, was a manager in the Bank of India. He is the brother of Devika, is a software Engineer. He did his studied from Rajaram College in Kolhapur. At the age of 18 his college entrusted him with the responsibility of representing India as a Cultural Ambassador to Canada.
A year later he and three others from his college were sent to Britain as army cadets and received training in the royal army, navy, and Air Force.
Though R. Madhavan nursed an ambition to join the army, he went on to pursue a degree in Electronics upon the insistence of his parents. After completing his degree, he went on to teach communication and public speaking at workshops around India. At one such workshop in Maharashtra, he came in contact with Sarita Birje, an air hostess, who then went on to become his wife in 1999. They had their first son, Vendant in August 2005.
R. Madhavan did a sandalwood talc advertisement for Santosh Sivan in 1996. Sivan recommended him to Mani Ratnam for a screen test for a role in ‘Iruvar’. However R. Madhavan failed to bag the role. He then turned his attention to Television and appeared in a number of series and shows such as ‘Yule Love stories’ (being his first venture into Hindi television serials), ‘Banegi Apne Baat’, ‘Yeh Kahan Aa Gaye Hum‘ and ‘Tol Mol ke Bol’. His first Indian movie was the Kannada movie ‘Shanti Shanti Shanti’ in which he played second lead role.
He started his career in 1996 film Is Raat Ki Subah Nahi. In the film, he play the small role as a singer in Club. After that his next film Inferno released in 1997, the film directed by Mani Ratnam and in the film; he played the role of Ravi. In 1999, Mani Ratnam cast him in lead in his Tamil romantic film ‘Alaipayuthey’ which went on to become a blockbuster! He then went on to act in other Tamil movies such as ‘Kannathil Muthamittal’, ‘Run’, ‘Anbe Sivam’, ‘Aayutha Ezhuthu’ winning him awards and accolades and ‘Minnale’ which was remade into hindi as ‘Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein’ marking Madhavan’s debut into mainstream Bollywood movies. Although Madhavan hasn’t played many leading roles in Bollywood movies, his cameo as well as supporting roles such as in ‘Rang De Basanti’, ‘Guru’, ‘Mumbai Mere Jaan’ are much appreciated and critically acclaimed too. His role in ‘3 Idiots’ won him a nomination in the prestigious Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor category.
A vegetarian and animal lover he is a brand ambassador for PETA. He is fluent in English, Hindi, and Tamil. He works for Bollywood and South Indian film Industry and well known as Alaipayuthey (2000), Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein (2001), Anbe Sivam (2003), Aayutha Ezhuthu (2004), Guru (2007), 3 Idiots (2009), Tanu Weds Manu (2011) and Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015).
